The Cleaning Award 2010 provides that employees are entitled to a paid break and/or an unpaid break during their ordinary hours of work. Employees are, in certain circumstances, also entitled to a meal break when they work overtime.
A shiftworker, and an employee that works a broken shift, who works more than five (5) ordinary hours in one shift. will be entitled to a paid break of no less than twenty (20) minutes. The break will be taken no earlier than four (4) hours after the employee commenced work and not later than five (5) hours after the employee commenced work.
In addition to the twenty(20) minute paid break, a full time shiftworker, who does not work a broken shift, will be entitled to an additional ten (10) minute paid break. There are no time constraints as to when this break can be taken.
An employee (including an employee who works a broken shift) who is not a shiftworker (i.e. an employee who works ordinary hours between 6.00am and 6.00pm, Monday to Friday), and who works more than four and a half hours (4 1/2) ordinary hours in a day will be entitled to and unpaid break of not less than thirty (30) minutes.
